The German Shorthaired Pointer, also referred to as GSP, was first bred in Germany in the late 1800’s. They were bred to be extremely versatile; superior hunters on land and water, and as family pets. The GSP is especially good with children; gentle, loving, and protective.
The German Shorthaired Pointer is capable of hunting larger and more fierce game than most hunting dogs. They are tireless and reliable. Because they are so active and intelligent, it is crucial that they receive training and regular exercise. They love to hike and swim!
The German Shorthaired Pointer’s coat is short and flat; it has a dense undercoat that is water resistant. Though they have a short coat, it will keep them fairly warm in cooler climates. They require very little grooming, though GSPs do tend to shed a lot! They need an occasional bath, routine brushing, and regular ear cleaning. They can be prone to ear infections if their floppy ears are not kept clean and dry.
Actor Bradley Cooper rescued his German Shorthaired pointer “Samson” from a kill shelter. Author and television personality Ben Stein loves the GSP and owns one. Country singer Tim McGraw also has a GSP companion. The appreciation for the breed goes way back! Legends Andy Williams and Clark Gable also had GSPs back in the day.
The GSP is often thought to be the featured dog on the Westminster Kennel Club's logo; however, the logo actually features the English Pointer!
