The German Shepherd originated in 1899. The dog was first introduced in Germany as a herding dog for sheep and cattle.

German Shepherds are confident dogs, and known for their intelligence and strength. They do well when given a purpose or a job. Those characteristics make them incredibly useful as working dogs. German Shepherds are often used as guide dogs and for those with disabilities. They are used by military and police, even search and rescue.

The German Shepherd was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908. Currently the German Shepherd is second on their most popular breed list!

German Shepherds don’t require a lot of grooming, but benefit from an occasional bath and thorough brush out. This keeps their skin and coat healthy. They should be frequently brushed out to remove dead hair, especially in during shedding seasons!
